Kung Fu Panda - PC Game

This game is based on the upcoming animated movie that chronicles the adventures of Po the Panda as he strives for kung fu mastery.

Activision and Luxoflux/XPEC/Beenox deliver another solid, child-oriented game based on Dreamworks’ upcoming Kung Fu Panda.

As expected, the game stars the titular kung fu Panda – Master Po. Master Po has lofty goals of being a stellar, kung fu-busting fighter but unfortunately for him, he’s a bit too clumsy to achieve his goal. Fortunately, Master Po is being trained by Master Shifu, along five other Kung Fu masters (known as the Furious Five). When Tai Lung, the movie and game’s villain, escpaes from the Chorh Gom prison, Master Po has to show off what he’s learned, take on Tai Lung’s army, and eventually the man himself. The game, which I imagine follows the movie loosely, is quite humorous and often quite charming.

As an action platformer, Kung Fu Panda is heavily based on light combat. Master Po can jump and double jump, as well as pull off fast and power attacks and the ability to use weapons from the environment. These are in addition to his special attacks, which include Panda Quake (belly flop with an aftershock), Iron Belly (bounce forward and roll into enemies), and Panda Stumble (a speed bounce forward). The game lets you collect coins, which you can use to improve Po’s fighting ability by bettering his health or the damage a move does. Further, the game lets you unlock certain outfits in the game, which should prove fun for younger gamers.

While most of your time will be spent battling enemies as Po, that’s not all you’ll do. You’ll occasionally play as the other members of the Furious Five, fight bosses, complete quick action scenes, play minigames, and complete side quests. In addition, the game includes a multiplayer mode for up to four players. You’ll find Hong Kong (try to get three similar icons in a row), Shanghai (a Kung Fu Panda themed mahjong, undoubtedly aimed at parents), Po Go (a memory game) and a more traditional four-player combat game. The trick is that the multiplayer features are unlocked by playing the singleplayer version, although this shouldn’t be difficult even for kids.

The game’s soundtrack fits it perfectly and complements the visuals quite nicely. The sound effects are more than adequate, although they don’t particularly stand out one way or the other. Although Activision did not hire most of the movie’s big stars (Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, etc) for the game, the soundalikes they hired sound remarkably similar to the movie’s stars. It’s clear that you aren’t really listening to Jack Black at times, but for the most part, it’s difficult if even possible to tell.

Overall, Kung Fu Panda is another well-made kid-focused licensed game from Activision. The gameplay manages to switch things up and be sufficiently challenging to engage older gamers, while keeping the core gameplay accessible to younger gamers. With solid gameplay and a great presentation, Kung Fu Panda is easy to recommend to fans of the movie or parents looking to entertain their kids with a robust yet accessible action platformer.

Novalogic's Delta Force was originally one of the foremost tactical shooter series in computer gaming. However, if last year's Task Force Dagger is any indication, the series is in decline. The newest game in the series, Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, focuses on the UN intervention in Somalia in the 1990s, as portrayed in the popular novel and motion picture Black Hawk Down. The new Delta Force game makes some improvements to the series, but it's difficult to take seriously, especially considering some of the game's action sequences, which resemble old arcade games more than they do actual military operations.

Black Hawk Down is loosely inspired by missions undertaken by elements of Delta Force, the US 75th Ranger Regiment, the 10th Mountain Division, and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. The game is also filled with real-world vehicles and weapons, but don't let that fool you. Black Hawk Down is mostly a straightforward, simplistic action game with some real-world trappings.

The Settlers: Rise Of An Empire

may be the prettiest medieval city-building game that we've ever seen. Of course, this is a genre that's occupied pretty much by just The Settlers in the first place, but that doesn't change the fact that Rise of an Empire will have you building realistic-looking medieval cities, as opposed to a haphazard collection of buildings.

At its core, Rise of an Empire is about building up a complex medieval economy that's able to supply all the various and sundry needs of a populace. That includes food, protection, entertainment, goods, and more. The idea in Rise of an Empire is to make these processes come alive like never before, so the camera has been moved a lot closer and the beautiful graphics let you see every tiny detail, from the butcher hacking apart meat in his shop to the woodcutter pushing his wood cart around.

Earlier Settler games promoted the idea of sustainable economies, and that remains the case with Rise of an Empire. For instance, you can use deer as a steady food supply, provided you don't overhunt them or chop down the forests that they like to inhabit. Do either, and you'll either exhaust the supply of deer or drive them off.

Blue Byte promises a very diverse and detailed economy this time around, and you'll need it as your medieval city grows. Just like in history, as the middle class emerges it will demand goods and services and luxury items, which will have to be accounted for. The medieval cities that you can build in the game are picture-postcard beautiful, with paved roads and plazas. You'll also need to surround them with high walls, as there is a real-time combat component to the game6 whenever barbarians or hostile armies appear.

Dividing the map into separate territories is another new wrinkle. Knights can claim neutral lands by simply building an outpost there, while enemy-held regions can be seized by destroying or occupying the rival outpost. However, this whole concept doesn't add much of a strategic layer to battles because destroying an opponent's outpost causes all the buildings in the territory to self-destruct. So you never get the chance to wage back-and-forth battles for key castles or get the opportunity to make hard decisions, such as razing settlements or attempting to conquer them to win over the citizenry. You just duke it out over resources, but most maps are so well stocked with wildlife, sheep, and the like that there is rarely any need to go to war to provide your peasants with sausages or woolen undies.

ArmA: Combat Operations
ArmA is a challenging and immersive game of modern warfare, but one packed with plenty of frustrating moments and flaws, as well.

The things that set ArmA apart from the rest of the crowded military first-person shooter field are the same things that set Flashpoint apart from this pack. There's a feeling of verisimilitude in ArmA that you don't get in most shooters, and that's due to the way that Bohemia Interactive approaches the game. Instead of putting you in a relatively small environment or holding your hand while taking you on a heavily scripted rollercoaster of a ride like most shooters do, ArmA plops you down in the middle of a huge island that's 400 square kilometers in size. While individual missions won't require you to traverse the entire breadth of the island, you will still operate in huge patches of territory, and that really gives you the sense that you are in some real place, as opposed to being in the level of a game.

ArmA is set on the Atlantic island of Sahrani. Think of it as an allegory to South and North Korea, but on a much smaller scale. The Kingdom of South Sahrani is an ally of the West, and the United States has deployed a small US Army contingent there. The NDRS is a totalitarian regime armed with Warsaw Pact equipment and has a nasty habit of invading its southern neighbor. Of course, the North invades the South again, and you'll play from the perspective of the American side, trying to slow and then reverse the invasion. This means that you'll participate in large-scale battles on foot and in a variety of vehicles, as well as volunteer for numerous side missions that require stealth or speed.

The campaign, told through some surprisingly well-done voice-overs narrating otherwise low-budget cutscenes, does feature some nice twists to it. There are basically two kinds of missions in ArmA: primary and auxiliary. The former are required to progress the story forward, while the latter are completely optional and can make your life a bit easier. For instance, if the main mission is a defensive one where you have to stop a big assault, you can even the odds a bit by conducting an auxiliary mission beforehand. This can involve sneaking behind enemy lines to assassinate a key enemy officer or ambush enemy convoys en route to the battle. This provides plenty of gameplay variety, as you can experience the wide range of modern-day military operations, though the downside is that these auxiliary missions can be so brutally difficult that they're often worth skipping, but more on this a bit later.

There are moments that happen in ArmA that are possible only due to the game's scale. You can be crouched on a hill, overlooking a vast valley, and watch enemy soldiers and tanks maneuver several kilometers away. Engagement ranges are much more like they are in real life, as you're trying to nail a target that's a couple hundred meters away. Or, you can literally get lost in a big town, with the crack of assault rifles and the boom of tank cannons around you. Each noise can send you scurrying for cover. Sure, a lot of games have these kinds of immersive sound effects as well, but for the most part they're just general background noise. In ArmA, if you hear assault rifles in the distance, you know that there's actually a firefight going on nearby, and you can investigate or run away from it, if you want. It's amazing how immersive this game is. A perfect example of this is early on, when you're on Humvee patrol and rolling through the countryside and towns of South Sahrani, only to be ambushed. The transition from tranquility to war is jarring, and experiencing it feels like watching news footage or a documentary movie.

The Lord Ring: War Of The Ring

The Lord of The Rings War of The Ring is the first real time strategy game (RTS) based on the trilogy The Lord of The Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien. The story of the game includes the whole story of the novel but very adapted. The graphics details are very good: while a soldier fights his sword stains with blood, also the buildings can be rotated in any direction when builded and the trained units come out of the building by the door. The game has two campaigns, Good campaign and Evil campaign, the two "civilizations". It supports multiplayer mode by lan. Includes a tutorial.

The War of the Ring itself takes place during the conflict while Frodo and Sam were on their quest to destroy the One Ring by throwing it into the fire of Mount Doom. But unlike the approach of the recent action games released by EA, the focus is not on this quest, or necessarily the several heroes that made up the Fellowship. Instead, Liquid and Vivendi shifted their view to the battles fought to keep the forces of Sauron out of the lands of men, Elves, and Dwarves including conflict that occured before the actual War of the Ring. Many of the battles that are fought in this game aren't actually found in the Lord of the Rings trilogy or history as far as I could find (admittedly I haven't read the many volumes of the History of Middle-Earth). Instead the game offers a bit of an interpreted nature of the events before and during the year and a half that the War lasted.

War of the Ring is definitely presented and made for the average strategy gamers and those that may not have been drawn to the genre in the past. And to this end, it does a good job. You'll find all of the normal features that you would expect in a typical RTS. You'll have to construct buildings on a map that serve several purposes such as training units and upgrading their abilities. All the while you'll have to mine ore from deposits, found conveniently in mounds in green pastures (lame) and harvest food using wells, which were conveniently located near the ore deposits. Then you'll need to build up an army and loose it upon the enemy while making sure that your "town" is defended as well. Mission objectives differ depending on the level, most of which have been done before.

There are more than 45 cars in all to buy or race, and as players win races they'll earn money and respect; the first with which to buy cars, the second to open new courses.

Winning races also earns rewind power, which is constrained per region and per race, meaning you'll have to choose wisely when you pick to rewind. Harder difficulty levels further limit rewind access, making you a tougher, meaner racer. All three regions, North America, Europe, and Japan, are open simultaneously, so you can jump from region to region if desired, and each region contains three tiers of six challenges (the final tier in each region offers fewer but tougher challenges). In short, there is an immense level of replay value and depth offered.

While the game's focus is clearly on driving, managing sponsors right will double or triple the income of winning an event and is a fun minigame on its own; making lots of money is crucial to entering higher-level, ultra-costly racing series. Hiring and managing a teammate is also a small but nice feature; not only because you'll need to avoid smashing into him during a race, but because some racers deceptively sell themselves as highly skilled. After a few races, it will be clear whether they were worth the signing bonus. Also, the four difficulty settings, which you can switch to at any time, offer a good way of getting the right level of challenge for beginners or hardcore racers.

EA Sports brings us Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008 -- right in time for those of us that are less interested in sports that involve doing “the wave.” If you are a fan of the arcade hit Golden Tee, you’ll enjoy the interface, here. You have options for swinging your club that include using a joystick or keyboard/mouse combination. I normally prefer the former with PC games, but in the case of golf, I like a keyboard. The sport doesn’t require lightning-fast button mashing or super high-jumps. Nope … this one is skill, patience and planning. The reference to Golden Tee is in regards to the way you swing. For novice users, you can use the (videogame golf) standard of synchronized clicking. That is, a click to get the swing going, then another at the precise point of release for maximum results. That’s always been fun and usually quite challenging (especially in putting), but now you can utilize the mouse movement, itself. You carefully pull the mouse backwards for your backswing, then jam it forward (as straight as possible) quickly to execute a nice swing. In the arcade, this is done with a large trackball, but with some effort, you get used to doing it with the mouse. I have had to use this technique for various videogame bowling offerings, so it was neither completely foreign nor hard to “master” (if such a thing exists). This little gem is called Trueswing and, as mentioned, optional to use. I liked it, personally. You can even pull up educational stats on your swing, to better hone your skills as you develop. This helped me a lot.

The AI of the ball, swing, environmental (wind and other nasty variables) and experience/ability is very precise. I did not expect much in the way of eye-rolling silliness that can ruin otherwise exceptional games. For instance, the putting in this one is very fair, for better or worse. The ball doesn’t get magically sucked into the pin if you get within 10 feet. You have to actually earn your putts. What a concept! The rough was easier for me to handle than in the past, though I imagine that’s just experience (finally) catching up to me. I tend to overcompensate when in roughs and hazards, but did not experience as many unforgiving overshoots. I am used to blasting a simple 10 foot putt to another fairway, but the enhanced putting action enabled me to be more accurate. I avoid sand traps whenever possible, but found my digging-out to be more reasonable this go ‘round.

The main screen invites you to navigate using their new "honeycomb" view. I guess that's more creative than frames or memorizing F-keys. As always, there are loads of good courses to sample. This version provides more than a dozen, which is up a few from 2007. There's the new FedEx Cup courses like Westchester Country Club and East Lake. Aside from new grass to see, there is also the insertion of LPGA players. "L" stands for Ladies (for the acronym-challenged). Your mix of players include John Daly, Vijay Singh, Natalie Gulbis and Christie Kerr. Oh yeah, and that Tiger guy. I understand that the player creation tool on other platforms allow you to input your own face, but that is missing from the PC.

Graphically, the game looks great. I did not experience many hang-ups or glitches. It seems slow to load up initially, but once you are “in,” it moves along without a problem. The characters look good, with minimal pixilation or other typical downsides when reproducing real-life people. The camera views are ample in variation, so you can’t blame poor performance on lack of perspective! Even the views from the blimp are nice to look at, though I can’t say I like the view from within a deep bunker. Who does? I make sure I turn off any programs that are not needed — which about all of them. Any processor/resource distractions will cause annoying hiccups that I choose not to experience.

Contract J.A.C.K. - PC Game

Pity poor Cate Archer. Everyone's favorite superspy in paisley has been replaced with a man in the latest addition to the No One Lives Forever franchise, a prequel called Contract J.A.C.K. The move is a timely one, seeing as the comely female version of James Bond by way of Austin Powers hasn't been wowing consumers accustomed to the stereotypical testosterone-heavy shooter. It's just a shame that developer Monolith couldn't have come up with something fresher and more involving, as the new release is merely a mediocre shoot-'em-up that can be finished in four hours.

Even in that limited time frame, Contract J.A.C.K. never takes off. You portray "ruthless assassin" John Jack (the J.A.C.K. of the title is also an acronym for Just Another Contract Killer), a thug working the other side of the street from Archer and her goody-two-shoes comrades in UNITY. Just weeks before the beginning of the events recounted in No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in H.A.R.M.'s Way, he gets forced into an assignment by arch-villain Dmitrij Volkov of HARM. But the potentially interesting angle of facing off against your old friends has been dumped for a hackneyed plot where Jack fights a group of Italian ne'er-do-wells called Danger Danger for the rights to a mad scientist currently dwelling on the moon.

Not being able to take on the likes of Ms. Archer and her mentor Bruno is a letdown from the very start. Even more disappointing, the sense of fun that permeated the series has been replaced by a guns-first philosophy. In some ways this is good, as the game gets right to the point in a way that its predecessors did not, but most often it proves simply numbing. All seven multipart missions deal strictly with shooting your way through waves of enemies from start to finish. You slaughter hired goons to escape a trap laid by a rival. You slaughter HARM agents that Volkov has sent to test your mettle. You slaughter Czechoslovakian soldiers guarding a rocket base. You slaughter Danger Danger storm troopers in secret headquarters, Italian villas, and even on the moon.

These are some interesting locales, particularly the moon base and a climactic fight in space reminiscent of the final scene in the Bond movie Moonraker. The lead-up to the final battle in the Italian countryside allows you to drive a scooter equipped with machine-gun cannons and is very scenic, set amidst rolling hills and a canal. Most settings, however, are pretty bland. The succession of Czech military installations consists of faceless warehouses awash in crates, and the huge village at the end of the game is like a maze of dead ends and doors that don't open. But no matter where you are, you never have time to soak up any atmosphere, since you're too busy bathing in blood.

And you get pretty bloody in Contract J.A.C.K. Aside from regular pauses to search for ways to open blocked doors (and pad out the running time of this brief shooter), there is nothing here but splattering bad guys all over the landscape. There is no stealth, no lock-picking, no playing around with the lethal hairpin, banana, and other nifty devices that UNITY's Santa's Workshop weapons lab provided Cate in the first two games. There are no conversations worthy of eavesdropping, no note trails to be pieced together to tell amusing side stories. Even the swinging '60s atmosphere has been all but eradicated. If not for old cars scattered through the levels and the great title song reminiscent of the classic Peter Gunn theme, the game could be taking place in the present day.

Developed by the Canadian studio Battlegoat studios, Supreme Ruler 2020 is a strategic and tactical geo-political game where direct control of the military and the policies of a nation becomes the key to survival.

This sequel to Supreme Ruler 2010, and offers new features such as improved graphics and sound, new AI, and single or world map play.

There are opportunities to create your government virtually anywhere in the world and take on the strain of running a small state or an entire country, depending on your patience level. If you’re not familiar with the controls and the ins and outs of the Supreme Ruler games I’d suggest starting with something small and working your way up. It’s not always easy at first to understand all of the boxes and controls you’re looking at, there are a LOT, though it gets better after the first hour or so of poking around at it and working through one of the scenarios or the campaign mode. These screens have been much better organized, moved to the bottom of the screen with a spinwheel selection so you can see what you need to access quickly.

The intense level of detail is both a good and a bad thing. It was fun to be able to see all of the detail on each of the commodities and projects I was dealing with, but at moments it felt like being back in a college economics class. That went hand in hand with cursing when I couldn’t find any petrol to trade, but then again that kinda feels like trying to find a petrol station with prices under an arm and a leg, so a good reflection on current social trends.

The minister system from Supreme Ruler 2010 has been further streamlined in 2020 and they do a good job with giving you a lot of options in whom you pick and what they’ll pursue. This becomes particularly important when you’re playing a larger country or area where there’s just too much going on for you to do everything yourself on a constant basis. You have an email box that your ministers can use to communicate with you, giving you advice and asking questions on the issues that you’ve chosen to involve yourself in. On other issues they’ll just happily go about their job and you’ll only really notice when they’re doing it brilliantly or not at all.

There is also a multiplayer mode that I’d love to do more with, but without having friends with the game I didn’t have anyone to network with. It’s a straightforward design for a hosted game where each player takes on an area and works towards an agreed upon measure of victory. Hopefully with more people coming online I’ll have a better chance to sink my teeth into that aspect.

I didn’t have a lot of complaints with Supreme Ruler, but there were a few things that bothered me. I do approve of the minister system in the game play, that’s why it’s listed under the good, however I often felt like I wasn’t really needed in the game once I got the ministers all set up. They were more than capable of taking care of things with limited input from me. Sometimes they were much better than I was at taking care of things, as I found when I put myself several hundred million dollars in debt with a couple of really poor trade choices. Left to themselves the ministers corrected my mistakes and pulled me back out of debt by the time my television program had finished. I suppose there are echoes of realism there, but I’d like to be able to run my country with help from the ministers, not them just tolerating me. I could lock them out of everything to take better control of the situation, but it felt very all or nothing and I never found a really good balance between the extremes.

The tutorial was another pain point for me. You click on the overview tutorial, which gives you limited information that boils down to ‘look at the other tutorials’, of which there are roughly a million. The interactivity of the tutorial has been improved but it’s still clunky and I did better at figuring things out by poking at them and seeing whether it helped or hindered my scores. Any RTS at the detail level of Supreme Ruler is going to take some time to learn and to explain, but it seems like there should be a simple guided game as a tutorial instead of the more abstract version offered here.

Unlike the previous Stronghold titles, Legends gives the player a choice of different starting rulers all with different troop types (including King Arthur and his knights of the round table, Count Vlad Dracul , and Siegfried of Germany). Other new features include the ability to play multi-player versus CPU controlled opponents. Also, for the first time, you can choose between different game play modes for online play, including death-match, king of the hill, economic war, and capture the flag. Stronghold Legends brings a new mythical element into the game.

There are certain things in life that a man like me shall always appreciate. Among them are the first sip of a good whisky at the end of a stressful day, the grumbly murmurings of Dylan Moran as he tames his crazy hair, a cryptic crossword and, yes, the feel of a 'classic' RTS game which holds the same design and layout as many of its genre from the last decade. It's oh-so comforting when I get a new strategy game and can slip into what I affectionately dub my 'Dictator Mode' and begin to send wave after wave of men to death without even having to reach for the manual. This is exactly how Stronghold Legends feels - comforting and familiar, like meeting an old friend you'd forgotten being madly in love with so many years ago. Legends is in fact not so much cast from a similar mould as those much loved games like Red Alert and Dune II as it is more like the exact original game with a new lick of paint. This is a good thing; those games were classics for a reason.

Of course, if you've played either of those games (or the handful of other truly classic RTS games) then there isn't much more I need to say about the game. Those people will already know if they'll love playing what is essentially the same game again in a new medieval fantasy setting or if they'll just stick with firing up some retroware and enjoy the originals. On the other hand, I do have a vague kind of duty to give the game a review that everyone will get something out of, so I'll spend the next couple of hundred words filling in those in who aren't in the know.

First things first: the game is divided into three campaigns, which are broadly defined as easy, medium and hard, but also have further names should you read the rather beefy manual. First there is the King Arthur campaign (or easy difficulty, or 'Good Alignment'), which basically involves running around killing lots of Saxons and listening to lots of funny Cornish accents. I have to admit, it's the first time I'd ever had a critical mission briefing delivered to me by somebody who sounded as if they spend the whole day drinking cheap cider and I certainly hope it isn't the last, because the voice acting is simply excellent, providing many laughs throughout the game's duration.

The second campaign is based around the Germanic adventures of Dietrich and Siegfried and is also called the medium difficulty or 'Neutral Alignment', depending on which part of the manual you want to base the title on. This campaign takes part almost exclusively in icy levels and the units all share a frosty theme among them, ranging from Ice Queens to Frost Giants. Again, slaughter is top of the menu as you push the freezing troops into battle again and again, it's just that this time it's a little bit more difficult and the background is a different colour.

he final campaign line in the game is based around Count Vlad Dracul (yes, a terrible way to get around using the name Dracula and all the stereotypes within) and is, in the continuing trend, both hard difficulty and 'Evil Alignment'. Yet again, slaughter is top of the menu, but this time the soldiers and buildings all share a magical evil and include some truly incredible examples of the mischief evil wizard vampires can accomplish, such as The Giant Demonic Bat which beautifully explodes across multiple enemies in true kamikaze fashion.

Oh, and as you can probably guess from the last sentence, Legends isn't a very realistic game. Even if the Giant Demonic Kamikaze Bat Soldiers were ignored then there is still the lightning bolt firing Merlin or the alignment-specific Dragons to contend with, so under no circumstances should players think that, just because it's a medieval themed RTS that it is in anyway comparable to the likes of Medieval II: Total War. It is in fact about as far removed from this as a game could get whilst still being essentially of the same genre. There is no nation to manage, only the immediate objectives on smaller scale battlefields, and the suspension of disbelief is shattered when you see a knight of the round table level a castle wall on his own.

Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings is a real-time strategy computer game set in the Middle Ages. It was released in 1999, and it is the second game of the Age of Empires series developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft. Because of its commercial success, an expansion pack was released: Age of Empires II: The Conquerors, followed by a Gold Edition, which bundled together the game and its expansion pack along with a bonus map and games recorded by Microsoft strategy experts.

Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings is sometimes called Age of Kings, or abbreviated as AoK, AoE2, Age2 or AoEII.

The player controls a society and guides them through four "ages". The game begins in the Dark Ages, where very few buildings and units are available. After a short time, the user gains the ability to advance to the Feudal Age, where more upgrades, buildings, and units become available. The next age is the Castle Age, in which the powerful castle may be built, and used to produce powerful units. Finally, the user can reach the Imperial Age, which is reminiscent of the early years of the Renaissance. Once the user has reached the Imperial Age, they gain access to all the upgrades, units, and buildings that may be built for their specific civilization.

The player directly controls the citizens, and can order them to move or attack (all units except for trade carts, fishing- and trade-ships), construct new buildings, gather necessary resources (villager units), and perform a range of other tasks, such as repair damaged buildings or garrison inside castles or town centers for safety.

Although the playing area includes cliffs and mountains, these additions do not actually represent changes in the height of the land. Instead, they just represent an obstacle around which units must move. However,units can go over hills. Similarly, buildings are not actually built, they are simply rendered to give the illusion of height.

There are four types of resources, all of which are necessary to foster a civization: wood, food, gold, and stone. Wood is used mainly for building structures, providing renewable food resources, building ships, training archers and for other similar uses. Stone is used mainly for constructing defenses like castles or towers. Gold and food are used for constructing units and researching technologies. In most cases, these resources can be traded for one another at the market rate. Often, one of the difficulties of a certain scenario or map is that it has a small supply of one type of resource, forcing players to adjust to this shortage

Shivers is set in Professor Windlenot's Museum of the Strange and Unusual, an abandoned collection of strange artifacts from around the world. It seems you've been dared to spend the night in the dilapidated old museum, which was never open to the public due to a bizarre incident that took place many years ago. Two teenagers and the professor himself disappeared under unknown circumstances, and you must solve the mystery if you're to survive until dawn.

Basically, your task is to collect a series of mischievous spirits, or Ixupi, which have been unleashed from the urns which held them. The urns and their accompanying lids are scattered throughout the grounds, and you must find the correct lid/urn combination to capture the corresponding Ixupi. Finding these objects is made more difficult by the fact that the professor was an eccentric who filled his museum with plenty of puzzles and secret passages.

These puzzles aren't particularly challenging, and many of them must be repeated every time you need access to an adjoining area. (This occurs all too frequently, since you can only carry one object at a time.) Fortunately, wandering around the museum is, at least for a while, an interesting experience. The displays are eerie and fascinating, and the mystery surrounding the museum is unveiled through the personal belongings of the missing persons. Unfortunately, once you've seen all there is to see, traipsing back and forth searching for objects you've already found becomes a repetitive chore, and the game loses some of its allure. In the end, Shivers is a game that has a look and feel guaranteed to get your attention, but may lack the depth of play to keep it for the long run.
